When a loved one’s life is ending too soon because of terminal illness, time spent together is all the more precious – especially at Christmas.

A gift of just £25 could pay for an hour’s care on Christmas Day, giving local families the chance to spend invaluable time together. With the expert care from our nurses, families can let go of their responsibilities as carers and make the most of the time together at Christmas.

But the cost of all our care services was over £9 million last year, with less than 25% of this provided by the government.

It’s the generosity and kindness of people like you that helps give local families their last, precious moments together.

Millie’s Story

Millie faced heartbreak in quick succession. First her mother Betty died of cancer. Then a year and a half later, her beloved husband Paul also died, following a brief but intense battle with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD).

For Millie, the memories of the time spent at St Barnabas are a great comfort.

My lasting memory of Mum is seeing her in there, smiling with all her family around her. She was just surrounded by love.

Millie’s mum, Betty, went into the hospice wracked by anxiety, pain and unable to eat. But within 24 hours Millie remembers an unbelievable change.

“They got her eating again. She looked well and she wasn’t in pain. Within 24 hours she looked like her again. She was happy…it was amazing what they did for her.”

One of the many things that makes St Barnabas so special is the ability to put everyone at their ease, despite the difficult circumstances. The  compassionate, round-the-clock care and expertise make the hospice a comforting place for anyone who stays there.

Tragically, Millie’s husband was also diagnosed with an incurable disease

Paul, Millie’s husband, was diagnosed with CJD (Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease). But she knew exactly where she wanted him to spend his final days. Millie was confident that St Barnabas would welcome all of Paul’s large family – even Bert, the family dog!

They treat your family like their own, like how you would treat your family. Nothing’s ever too much trouble.
